The foundation for these ambitions has been firmly established in recent years. During Euro 2024, Scorito demonstrated its enormous reach with no less than 1.1 million participants and a staggering 650 million pageviews. For the 2026 World Cup, the bar is set even higher: the organization is counting on at least +20% organic growth in activity.
In conversation with Martijn van Dijk, founder of Scorito, we discuss how they plan to manage this growth.
The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest tournament ever with 104 matches; how are you going to prevent this from feeling like an administrative chore for the user?
Martijn: "That is indeed our biggest challenge and opportunity. We are not going to present the World Cup as 104 separate decision moments, because that would lead to prediction fatigue. The key is to reduce friction. We are working with smart bundling and filtering, such as predicting per matchday or phase, and we offer automatic suggestions based on previous choices.
In addition, we strongly believe in progressive engagement. Players don’t have to fill in everything in advance; we activate them at the right moments during the tournament. Our goal is for Scorito to enrich the viewing experience, not to make it feel like an obligation."
Scorito Business seems to be undergoing a transformation in recent years; how is the role of your platform shifting within the modern work environment?
Martijn: "We see that Scorito Business has now become much more than just a 'fun extra'; it is really starting to become a strategic HR tool. Companies are now using it very specifically for onboarding new employees or to connect international teams with each other.
Sport is a unique equalizer: on the scoreboard, hierarchy disappears. People who would normally never talk to each other now have a shared topic. The next step is integration with platforms like Slack and Teams to make employee engagement even more accessible."
You are expanding internationally, but what are the biggest lessons you have learned about copying Dutch success abroad?
Martijn: "The most important lesson is that the Netherlands is extremely mature when it comes to 'pool behavior'. Abroad, you need to focus much more on education and choose locally relevant sports. Thanks to our ecosystem, including the Dutch Sport Tech Fund, we gain access to the right networks. International growth is not a copy-paste exercise; it’s about building locally on a foundation that is technically scalable but content-wise flexible."
If we look five years ahead to 2031, what will the ultimate fan experience look like?
Martijn: "In five years, we will have completely bridged the gap between watching and experiencing. We are moving away from static 'predicting in advance' to a continuum of interaction during the match. Think of live data integrations and dynamic challenges during play. Scorito will no longer be a tool you use beside the match, but an indispensable second screen that makes the entire sports experience more intense."
