Scala Sports may operate largely under the radar as far as the outside world is concerned, but behind the scenes an impressive Dutch success story is unfolding. In a short space of time, the sports technology company has become the indispensable technological engine behind some of the world’s largest and most prestigious racket sports federations. What once started as an accessible consumer app for local tennis players has evolved into critical enterprise infrastructure for major tennis organisations such as the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in the United Kingdom and, soon, Tennis Australia (TA).
Through this strategic transformation into a high-quality B2B2C platform, Scala Sports has secured a unique market position. Rather than competing directly for individual consumers, the company now serves as the technological backbone of official sports governing bodies. This has given Scala immediate access to a vast, well-funded ecosystem, allowing it to indirectly reach approximately 200,000 active players worldwide. The transformation from consumer app to fundamental sports infrastructure is now complete.
Below, founders Leon and Bart discuss the company’s strategic shift, its technological milestones and its ambitious roadmap for the coming years.
Over the past four years, Scala Sports has undergone a fundamental pivot.
“In the early years, we focused directly on the end user, but we quickly discovered where the real scalability lies,” Leon and Bart explain. “National sports federations already have the network, the established reputation and the direct relationship with their members. What they often lack is flexible, modern technology that enables them to serve those players effectively. We therefore shifted our focus to a B2B2C model: we provide the advanced technology and operational workflows behind the scenes, enabling federations to offer their communities a premium experience.”
This strategy is paying off. By joining forces with tennis federations in major markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, Scala Sports has created a powerful flywheel that now facilitates on-court activity for 200,000 active players.
Developing software for official national sports federations is a specialised discipline. It requires a robust enterprise architecture capable of handling large volumes of data and complex workflows.
Over the past several years, Scala Sports has developed an all-in-one platform that supports multiple federations and sports while also managing complex modules such as payments, ratings, in-app chat, smart notifications, automated refund and customer-support workflows, and an extensive back-office environment for the federations themselves.
The company’s greatest technological milestone is its scalability and speed.
“We have designed our platform to be so modular and flexible that we can launch a complete, customised app environment for a new federation within two weeks. The platform is now also fully available on the web. This allows our software to integrate seamlessly with the federations’ existing digital ecosystems, making the barrier to integration extremely low.”
Now that the foundations are in place and the software has proven itself among leading global organisations, the commercial roadmap is focused on two strategic areas. On the one hand, Scala Sports is expanding into new countries and federations. On the other, the company is focused on maximising its impact within its existing partnerships.
“Our ultimate ambition is to become the central player app for everyone who picks up a racket, from weekly recreational players to highly committed competitive athletes. We want to create one central digital destination where players can instantly discover tournaments, competitions and activities taking place nearby and join them with a single click.”
To achieve this effectively, Scala applies a hybrid approach in each market. Wherever possible, the platform integrates with a federation’s existing legacy software. Where necessary, Scala builds or replaces specific components itself.
Recent examples of features developed by Scala include Social Team Leagues, which enable players to participate in accessible competitions as part of informal teams, and the Hitting Partner Programme, which periodically matches players with suitable tennis partners based on their playing level, location and availability.
The shift towards a B2B2C model has also fundamentally changed Scala Sports’ strategic and financial profile. From a commercial perspective, the company now develops exclusively for federations and governing bodies through licensing models and revenue-sharing arrangements. This creates predictable, recurring revenue streams in the form of SaaS revenue and establishes deep integration within the international sports ecosystem.
“We have effectively transformed from a standalone consumer app into digital infrastructure for the international sports industry. Naturally, this also affects how we view the future. Four years ago, we may have been a potential match for traditional consumer-app companies. Today, a logical strategic buyer would come from an entirely different category, such as a major international sports technology conglomerate or a company specialising in federation software.”
The priorities for the near future have been clearly defined:
Dominance within existing networks: Become the primary player app for existing partners by continuously introducing new formats that appeal to both recreational and competitive players.
Aggressive growth in the United States: The US market is enormous.
“Our revenue in the United States is growing by more than 130% this year, while we are still only serving a fraction of the market. This will therefore be a major commercial focus in the period ahead.”
